Masjid Agung Jawa Tengah the Great Mosque of Central Java
The Great Mosque of Central Java is the largest and most magnificent and is an icon and pride of the people of Central Java province. This mosque is also one of the largest mosques in Indonesia.
This magnificent mosque was inaugurated by the President of the Republic of Indonesia for the 2004-2009 period, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono by signing an inscription made of natural stone 3.2 meters high and weighing 7.8 tons. This natural stone was brought from the slopes of Mount Merapi. And named the Great Mosque of Central Java (MAJT)
The architecture of this mosque combines three styles. Javanese architecture is represented in the body of the roof of the mosque which is in the form of a pyramid and the base of the mosque pillars with batik motifs such as the tumpal model, untu walang, kawung, and parang-parangan. Arabic architecture can be seen from the dome of the peak of the mosque and the walls of the mosque which are decorated with calligraphy. Roman-Greek architecture is seen in the interior design and coloring of the corners of the building.
One of the characteristics of this mosque is the six giant hydraulic umbrellas on the terrace of the mosque. This umbrella that can open and close automatically adopts the model found in the Nabawi Mosque, Medina. With a height of 20 meters each and a span of up to 14 meters, this umbrella functions as a roof when the number of worshipers is overflowing.
Another specialty is the 99-meter-high Asma'ul Husna tower. The tower, called the Al Husna Tower, is located in the southwest corner of the mosque and can be seen from a radius of 5 kilometers. The existence of the tower is a symbol of the grandeur of this mosque.
The tower also functions as a religious tourism destination. In addition to the fresh air, the telescope in the tower pampers visitors so that they can enjoy the beautiful views of the city of Semarang and the ships at the Tanjung Emas port.
In the mosque plaza there is a banner that says Gerbang Al-Qanathir which means magnificent and valuable. Here there are 25 Al-Qanathir pillars as a symbol of the 25 apostles that form an arch around the plaza.
Stepping inside, you will see a typical Javanese-style door. After passing through the door, you will see a very large and magnificent room dominated by light brown on the floor and green wood accents on the inside roof.
The mihrab of the mosque looks elegant with a frame made of wood carvings. The pulpit section comes from a wall that is deliberately opened by providing space inside for the preacher to preach. The circular chandelier that tends to be minimalist gives the impression of elegance and simplicity.
In addition to being a place of worship and religious propagation, the Great Mosque of Central Java is a tourist attraction, especially religious tourism. The large number of people who visit also has a real impact on the economic development of the surrounding community.
